Goodbye, Turdblossom

Top White House aide Rove resigns

Top White House aide Karl Rove has said he will resign at the end of August.

"I just think it's time," Mr Rove said in an interview for the Wall Street Journal, adding that he was quitting for the sake of his family.

Mr Rove is a senior political adviser to President George W Bush and has worked with him for more than a decade...

Last month, the US Senate issued a subpoena against him as part of an investigation into the sacking of eight federal prosecutors, but Mr Bush ordered him not to testify, citing executive privilege...
So long, Turdblossom.

Of course, I'm not naive enough to believe that Karl "Bush's Brain" Rove is about to vanish and cease to exercise his influence over the US government. I don't buy this "it's time for family" line in the least. First off, the days of ShrubCo are numbered; there doesn't appear to be anyone in the field of Republican presidential candidates who is willing to carry Bush's agenda forward. With Dubya having become a lame duck, there probably isn't much for Rove to do beyond ducking subpoenas these days. Second... well, it's probably easier to duck those subpoenas if you're not part of the administration to begin with.

Rumor has it that Dick Cheney has been redecorating his undisclosed location in anticipation of receiving a new roommate. Could it be that Dick and Karl are going to finally settle down together and hire Glenn Murphy as their new houseboy? And more importantly, what do you buy these guys as a housewarming present? I was thinking about one of these, but I think Cheney already has one...
