Obama Lights Up: Ruminations from a Fellow Addict

Will the stunning revelations never cease? When pressed during an interview with Tom Brokaw, Barack Obama waffled a bit before admitting that he hasn't been entirely successful in kicking his nicotine addiction. He still lights up from time to time, but he's promised that he won't do it in the White House.

During his interview with NBC News' Tom Brokaw over the weekend, President-elect Barack Obama acknowledged that he has had some trouble kicking his smoking habit but promised that the White House would remain a smoke-free zone.

"There are times where I've fallen off the wagon," Mr. Obama said when asked if he had stopped smoking...

Let's get the obvious out of the way. Smoking is bad. Kids, don't try this at home. Everybody tells you this stuff, so why should I repeat it? In most ways, this item is a non-story. The last eight years of radical misgovernment have left many aspects of our nation's well-being in smoking ruins. A smoking Executive? If he can pull America out of its historical nosedive and make repairs to our economy, infrastructure, international relations and commitment to education, I don't care if Obama likes to pound nails up his nose while singing the theme song from Bonanza at 3:00 in the morning in drag. Really, really bad drag. Get over yourselves, snap snap.

So while I'll readily admit that a smoking president might not be the greatest thing in the world, it's far from the worst. I say this as a smoker myself, and one who, like Obama, has made repeated and unsuccessful attempts to kick the habit. In light of that, my first bit of advice to the President-Elect, were he listening, would be to stay away from Chantix. It did weird things to me when I tried it, and I got my hands on a prescription the week after it went on the market. Chantix impaired my memory and caused me to have multiple episodes of sleep paralysis that left me an utter wreck after about two months on the stuff. We can't risk having that in a president. All things considered, he's better off sneaking out to the Rose Garden for the occasional smokebreak... and so are we if he stays away from varenicline.

So, even though I am painfully aware of how addictive cigarettes are and have a pretty thorough understanding of how and why they're so bad for you, I'm going to play the optimist here and speak about the upside of this nasty habit. Yes, there is one and no, it's not worth the health consequences and no, this isn't an endorsement of inhaling particulate matter. Still, the guy already smokes. Let's think about the lung being half-full for a moment.

In one way, I've benefited from being a smoker. Because we smokers are banned from indulging our habit indoors in the workplace (and rightfully so), we have to step away from whatever else we're doing every so often in order to pump a little sweet, sweet nicocrackatein into our bodies in order to be able to maintain our concentration and evenness of mood. It's boring to do that by ourselves, so smokers naturally form little cliques that take breaks together. From experience, I can say that these little sessions have allowed me the opportunity to learn about all sorts of things — useful things — from other smoking colleagues. This is as true now that I am studying biology as it was when I was a headhunter. It's hard to get time from people to simply learn from them what they know; everyone's days are pretty full. Those smokebreaks make it happen. I've learned about everything from inside information regarding the executive teams at high-tech startups to the problems with designing primers for insect mitochondrial genes from fellow junkies.

Might Obama reap the same sort of benefit from amongst the negative consequences of his unhealthful indulgence? He might. You know, he might not be the only world leader, or staffer employed by a world leader, who smokes. He might not be alone out there on the White House steps puffing away in the dead of winter. Who knows what breakthroughs might come when he's joined out there by some government official from another country? What inside knowledge might he gain from sharing a few tar-tawnied moments with a staffer traveling with the Prime Minister of Brunei? Scorn if you must, but these smoke session are intimate in a way that the inside of an office or conference room can never hope to be. You're removed from that environment. You're outside. Maybe you're cold and feeling a little alienated. It's natural that such a situation breeds candor amongst those involved. Obama's health might suffer just a little, but we as a nation might just come out ahead because of it.

I have another common trait I share with Obama, or at least I like to think so. Both he and I are highly educated and possessed of a level of intelligence markedly higher than the outgoing president. The latter is, in and of itself, not saying very much, I know. Still, from my own experience I can state that my own awareness of both the costs of smoking and my inability (so far) to quit is a rather humbling thing. It reminds me of my own frailties and it probably does the same for Obama. Such weaknesses are intrinsically humiliating things to anyone with even a modicum of self-awareness, and Obama's waffling in the interview likely demonstrates that he has experienced a similar awareness and its consequent humbling effect. I've long maintained that anyone narcissistic enough to think they ought to be president probably shouldn't be elected, so it's a hopeful sign that Obama gets this periodic thump upside his head with the two-by-four of an unresolved character flaw. He's aware that he's not perfect, that he can do wrong by himself. He's not likely to wave that silly banner of divine right and council like some Chief Executives we know. I'm aware that plenty of people will disagree with this notion that I prefer my humans both flawed and aware of their flaws. Lots of folks think that a president should be a spiritual leader of some sort, a shining paragon of white knight rectitude. Me, I like to see that the guy knows there are some chinks in the armor. It's hard to be humble when one thinks of themselves as perfected. Besides, as embarrassing a habit as smoking is, is it really any more humiliating than


I think not.

Now, look, the fact that Obama is going to sneak off for a cigarette when the pressure is on every so often is not something to be celebrated. Still, presidents have done a lot worse in recent memory. I'll take smoke-n-choke over shock-n-awe any day of the week.

So, Mr. President-Elect, smoke 'em if you got 'em until you don't need to get 'em anymore. From one smokin' schmuck to another, you have my sympathy on this. It must hurt to have the press and the naysayers jabbing their fingers into this bullet wound in your self-image. I'm sure Michelle gives you as much grief over the habit as LL gives me; I also can't smoke in my home or in my office and I'm quite acquainted with the winter winds of New England as one result. Still, maybe you can leverage this for our benefit somehow. Whatever it takes. If I'm ever in DC and see you out having a dose of the bad stuff, I'd love to come and join in your act of enlightened self-destruction. I've got a few thoughts on research funding, and so do you. We can talk about it while we die just a little.

See? Smokers' optimism.

Could Marijuana Protect Short Term Memory in Aging Brains?

Current research being done at the University of Ohio seems to indicate that specific compounds found in marijuana could protect short-term memory in the brains of older mammals — at least rats. A synthetic analog of tetrahydrocannabinol may act on brain cells in the hippocampus, a brain structure responsible for short-term memory, to prompt generation of new cells and reduce inflammation that interferes with normal functioning. The trick is that once impairment has already begun, it can't be reversed.

Scientists are high on idea that marijuana reduces memory impairment

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The more research they do, the more evidence Ohio State University scientists find that specific elements of marijuana can be good for the aging brain by reducing inflammation there and possibly even stimulating the formation of new brain cells.

The research suggests that the development of a legal drug that contains certain properties similar to those in marijuana might help prevent or delay the onset of Alzheimer's disease. Though the exact cause of Alzheimer's remains unknown, chronic inflammation in the brain is believed to contribute to memory impairment.

Any new drug's properties would resemble those of tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, the main psychoactive substance in the cannabis plant, but would not share its high-producing effects. THC joins nicotine, alcohol and caffeine as agents that, in moderation, have shown some protection against inflammation in the brain that might translate to better memory late in life.

"It's not that everything immoral is good for the brain. It's just that there are some substances that millions of people for thousands of years have used in billions of doses, and we're noticing there's a little signal above all the noise," said Gary Wenk, professor of psychology at Ohio State and principal investigator on the research.

Wenk's work has already shown that a THC-like synthetic drug can improve memory in animals. Now his team is trying to find out exactly how it works in the brain.
Immoral? What makes getting high immoral?
"When we're young, we reproduce neurons and our memory works fine. When we age, the process slows down, so we have a decrease in new cell formation in normal aging. You need those cells to come back and help form new memories, and we found that this THC-like agent can influence creation of those cells," said Yannick Marchalant, a study coauthor and research assistant professor of psychology at Ohio State...

"Could people smoke marijuana to prevent Alzheimer's disease if the disease is in their family? We're not saying that, but it might actually work. What we are saying is it appears that a safe, legal substance that mimics those important properties of marijuana can work on receptors in the brain to prevent memory impairments in aging. So that's really hopeful," Wenk said.
Wait... if it might work to simply use the real thing, why not just let 'em do it? Why do we need to develop a synthetic drug that will undoubtedly cost a lot more? If it's the smoking part (after all, inhaling particulate matter is never a good idea) that's bad, make brownies. Sugar-free, low-fat and loaded up up omega 3 oils, of course. Wouldn't some healthy pot brownies be more affordable than pills?

Personal note: Alzheimer's doesn't run in my family. I think I've had only one relative, my great-grandmother, who contracted it at all, and she got it so late in life that she passed away before it ever advanced much. Not much personal interest in this development, in other words.
..the researchers also determined that WIN acts on receptors known as CB1 and CB2, leading to the generation of new brain cells – a process known as neurogenesis. Those results led the scientists to speculate that the combination of lowered inflammation and neurogenesis is the reason the rats' memory improved after treatment with WIN.

The researchers are continuing to study the endocannabinoid system's role in regulating inflammation and neuron development. They are trying to zero in on the receptors that must be activated to produce the most benefits from any newly developed drug.

What they already know is THC alone isn't the answer.

"The end goal is not to recommend the use of THC in humans to reduce Alzheimer's," Marchalant said. "We need to find exactly which receptors are most crucial, and ideally lead to the development of drugs that specifically activate those receptors. We hope a compound can be found that can target both inflammation and neurogenesis, which would be the most efficient way to produce the best effects."
Well heck, you guys are no fun.

It's ironic that one of the traditional gripes against marijuana is that it impairs short-term memory and here we are reading about how it protects it. I suspect the trade-off is between the stimulation of neurogenesis obtained from small doses of the active ingredient(s) and the intoxication brought about by massive dosage. It's just like alcohol, perhaps. Nobody forgets their Saturday night after having a beer or two, but downing a six pack or three might well impair short-term memory. Of course, I'm no neurobiologist. I just think it's a bit silly to bring morality into the question.

Maybe just saying no wasn't such a good idea after all. As with many things, perhaps moderation is the key to deriving benefit.

Mycological Consumer Fraud: Know Thy Shrooms, Dude

Three men in New Hampshire have been arrested for reselling mushrooms they bought at the supermarket. The catch? They were using blue food coloring to make the ubiquitous Agaricus bisporus buttons look more like much more interesting Psilocybe mushroom. I'm not sure who they were going to fool with such a poorly conceived scam. While it's true that hallucinogenic Psilocybe mushrooms stain blue on at least some portion of the fruiting body when bruised, the two species look very different in a number of other ways. It's a bit like trying to pass off carnations as roses. Still, the geniuses did manage to sell $900 worth of their faux magic mushrooms to an undercover police officer in Kingston and have been arrested — and two of them still had the blue food coloring all over their hands.

KINGSTON – Three men accused of trying to sell fake hallucinogenic mushrooms have been caught blue-handed.

Police said the men were arrested after one of them sold a quarter-pound of mushrooms for $900 during an undercover drug probe. When police later pulled over the men, two had hands stained with blue food coloring.

Police Chief Donald Briggs Jr. said police believe the mushrooms were purchased at a grocery store along with the blue food coloring used to dye the mushrooms and make them appear more like a potent psilocybin mushroom...
Now really, how dumb were these guys?

I don't advocate the ingestion of Psilocybe mushrooms nor do I condemn it. If you want to suck down a bunch of fungal pesticide evolved to discourage arthropods from consuming the reproductive structure, that's entirely your own business. Mycologically speaking, I don't find Psilocybe a particularly interesting genus. Still, there's a danger to people who do this sort of thing because its entirely possible you could be buying something much more unsavory than Agaricus bisporus when you think you're get P. cubensis or somesuch.

In other words, if you really want some "shrooms, dude," know how to tell you're getting the right thing. As laughable as the clowns in this story are, they had some reason to believe that their scam would work and it's entirely possible that this isn't the first time they've done it. Somebody in New Hampshire, in other words, may have bought from them before and that fact opens up some troubling possibilities. Whatever silly legalities society's moral opposition to intoxication ends up imposing on them, I don't think many of us want to see someone seriously poisoned for such a crime. I don't even want people to get sick. There are some much more toxic common mushrooms out there which could be passed off as Psilocybe than can A. bisporus with a little food coloring. I could easily see some enterprising idiot doing this with an Enteloma, for instance, and certainly a Stropharia can pass for Psilocybe. Even mycologists have a hard time separating the two genera in a satisfying way.

Try this at home. What kind of mushroom is that to the left of this paragraph (click for a larger image)? Can you come up with a reasonable identification to genus? Do you have any idea whether or not it's edible, hallucinogenic or toxic? This is a relatively easy genus to identify, by the way, and the photo contains all of the characters one would need to figure out the genus for this one. Would you eat this?

The moral of the story is, Know Thy Mushroom. If you don't know how to identify a Psilocybe, you probably shouldn't be eating it. You could wind up ripped off by the blue-handed mushroom fakers... or worse. Much, much worse.

Albert Hoffman, Father of LSD, Takes the Big Trip

Albert Hoffman, the Swiss scientist who discovered LSD, has passed away in Basel at the age of 102.

Hoffman's discovery of the potent psychotropic drug came while investigating the biochemistry of the ascomycetous fungus Claviceps purpurea, a pathogen of grasses. It was one of history's classic accidents, really. Hoffman knew that C. purpurea synthesized a number of alkaloids and those compounds were already known to be useful in medicine when Hoffman isolated one of them, D-lysergic acid, and from that produced the first ever batch of lysergic acid diethylamide, in 1938. In a moment of fateful laboratory sloppiness, some of his product got on his fingers and thereafter into his bloodstream purely by accident. While it's not the most glamorous of hypotheses about how this happened, one urban legend suggests that this might have occurred because he was picking his nose.

Albert Hoffman dies at 102However it happened, Hoffman was floored by the experience and duly noted the effects. The potent mind-altering effects later targeted the drug as a potential treatment for some mental disorders and experiments were carried out for several years before the US counterculture of the 1960's got wind of the stuff, largely through the efforts of a wacky little Harvard psychologist named Timothy Leary (who was also a Massachusetts native, by the way, and started his university education at Worcester's own College of the Holy Cross). For better or for worse, Hoffman's discovery changed American and arguably all of Western culture thereafter. The recreational use and abuse of LSD led to it being made illegal in the US in 1966.

Unlike Leary, Hoffman wasn't a flamboyant character. He eventually became head of the research department of Sandoz pharmaceuticals and wrote a book about LSD, LSD, My Problem Child. He believed all his life that the drug could be used as a treatment for mental and emotional diseases — and he was probably right, although its doubtful that it will ever be accepted for such applications. Hoffman's "oops" of 1938 spawned events that were far beyond anything that Hoffman himself would have advocated for his "problem child."

If nothing else, Hoffman's claim to fame stands as testament to the accidents that happen in the course of scientific research that have the power to radically transform the world.

Good Fungus, Bad Fungus: Cryptococcus and Phellinus in the News

I'm still insanely busy and haven't had time to keep up with reading, let alone writing, blogs. The ends of semesters are crazy times.

Still, a couple of recent stories in the news regarding fungi caught my eye and they're worth a quick note.

First, the bad news. There appears to have been another death in British Columbia caused by Cryptococcus gattii. This time, the victim is a 45 year old woman from Cowichan Bay. The article doesn't mention whether she was immunocompromised; most people who have contracted C. gattii infections have been. That's bad enough, so I hope that she had some prior medical history that explains her susceptibility. For otherwise healthy people to start succumbing would point to the possibility of an even worse scenario.

The B.C. Coroners Service is investigating the death of a Cowichan Bay woman at Victoria General Hospital Tuesday morning who is suspected to have died from a yeast-like fungus found on trees on Vancouver Island.

Regional coroner Rose Stanton said the 45-year-old woman's death is under investigation but she is suspected to have died from Cryptococcus gattii. Results won't be available until the end of the week. About one person dies from the disease in B.C. each year...
There's also good news, though. I haven't read the publication yet, but it's being reported that an extract from the hymenochaete Phellinus linteus may ultimately help in treating cancer by preventing angiogenesis. Any potential new tool in fighting cancer is to be cause for a little celebration, though it should be cautioned that this has only been tested by direct application to cancer cells in a petri dish; it's a long way off from human trials. Still, yay Phellinus!
Mushroom extract may stop breast cancer growth

Extracts from a mushroom used for centuries in Eastern Asian medicine may stop breast cancer cells from growing and could become a new weapon in the fight against the killer disease, scientists said on Tuesday.

Laboratory tests using human breast cancer cells show the mushroom called Phellinus linteus has a marked anti-cancer effect, probably by blocking an enzyme called AKT. AKT is known to control signals that lead to cell growth.

Phellinus linteus -- called song gen in Chinese medicine, sang-hwang in Korean and meshimakobu in Japanese -- has previously been shown to have anti-tumour properties on skin, lung and prostate cancer cells.

The new research on breast cancer, however, marks the first time that scientists have started to understand how it works...

The findings were reported in the British Journal of Cancer.
This latest story comes on the heels of a recent report that a compound in Ganoderma lucidum (also polyporoid but only distantly related to Phellinus) blocks androgen receptors and thus may be useful in treating or even preventing prostate cancer. It all makes me proud to be a mad mycologist, even if a few bad apples like Cryptococcus and Puccinia crop up. Those aren't charismatic macrofungi, anyhow.

Green Fairy in Worcester: Absinthe Now Available Here

Who says Worcester isn't on the cutting edge? I've just learned this morning that absinthe, the fabled potion made from wormwood credited with inspiring everything from the genius of Picasso to the madness of Van Gogh, is available at two bars in the area. The Sole Proprietor right in town, as well as the Old Timer in Clinton, are selling it. It isn't cheap; $10 a glass at the Sole Proprietor and $9 at the Old Timer, but it's worth it just for the novelty. The stuff was illegal in the US until just last year.

Not that it stopped me from getting my hands on it. I knew two sources in the San Francisco Bay Area, so I've tried a couple of homemade versions in the past. In one case, I even tried uncut Artemisia extract, which was so bitter that I spent the next ten minutes making a noise something like a lovesick duck with a sore throat. Still, absinthe isn't bad when it's been properly prepared, and I'm sure the stuff they're selling here is better than the homebrews I've had.

Since last November, the drink list at the Sole Proprietor restaurant in Worcester has included a libation called “The Green Fairy.” If drinks could talk, what a tale the fairy would tell, providing she could remember the next morning.

Absinthe, the often emerald colored, highly potent spirit, banned for most of the 20th century in Europe and until 2007 in the United States for supposed madness-inducing properties, was called The Green Fairy by its devoted touts, whose number included so many artists and writers that absinthe’s nom de plume became the Green Muse...

"We don’t allow our customers to have more than two," said Nichols Quinn, night manager at the Sole on Highland Street.

"Absinthe is not a shot,” said Brian McNally, proprietor of the Old Timer in Clinton, which added the drink to its bar late last year. “No one is going to sit down and wax ’em back..."

Typically the alcohol content of consumer hard liquors ranges from 80 to 100 proof. The Swiss Kubler brand absinthe sold at the Sole is 106 proof. The Old Timer carries Kubler and a French brand, Lucid Superieure, which is 124 proof...

At the Old Timer, absinthe goes for $9 per drink. At the Sole, the price is $9.99...
At $10 a pop, I don't think many customers — even at the Sole Proprietor — are likely to want more than two. Still, I'm going to have to get myself over there one of these days. I'm not fond enough of absinthe to make it a regular thing, especially not at that price, but it's worth it just to be able to say, "I've drunk absinthe in Worcester." I'd imagine very few people can say that, and somehow I don't think all that many ever will.

Chutney Space Woo: India Daily Claims Distant Galaxy Engineered by Alien Civilization

Some things must be seen to be believed.

Four years ago, astronomers exploiting the phenomenon of gravitational lensing discovered the most distant galaxy ever observed, Abell 1835 IR1916. The galaxy is a located a bit more than 13 billion light years from earth, meaning that it had to have come into existing very early on in the cosmogonic process. It's interesting and, if you're particularly interested in such things, a bit exciting.

On the other hand, there appear to be some people claiming that the galaxy was literally engineered by some group of alien construction contractors. In fact, an editorial appearing in India Daily asserts that the whole of the Cosmic Renaissance is a product of such a feat of construction by a "Type IV civilization that created the big bang in their massive inter-universe particle colliders." It must be true, because unidentified "scientists" say so!

t is the furthest galaxy on the record. The galaxy Abell 1835 IR1916 is located about 13,230 million light-years away. Hence, it is seen at a time when the Universe was merely 470 million years young, that is, barely 3 percent of its current age.

Scientists are finding extraterrestrial influence in this galaxy. It seems the galaxy was engineered and fit into place by artificial forces...

Some 13.7 billion years ago, after the big bang, the Universe plunged into darkness. Neither stars nor quasars had yet been formed which could illuminate the vast space. The Universe was a cold and opaque place. Some thing went wrong, according to some scientists. Intervention was needed by the Type IV civilization that created the big bang in their massive inter-universe particle colliders. The big bang created a black hole in the hyperspace – our universe with three spatial dimensions and a forward moving single time dimension. According to scientists this was the start of ‘dark ages’ that was eventually corrected through the intervention of the Type IV civilization.

The galaxy Abell 1835 IR1916 is part of the "Cosmic Renaissance" that was artificially engineered by the Type IV civilization.
Errrr... which scientists are saying that ET was going around building galaxies? We're not given so much as a single name here by which we could check this wild assertion. Nor are we told by what criteria these hypothetical scientists would make the claim that a galaxy was engineered in an "inter-universe particle collider." How would they know this? Extraordinary claims require extraordinary proof, and I can't think of a more extraordinary claim than one that insists that galaxies were engineered by spacemen... but there's no proof here, nor even an inkling as to where one might go to review the evidence leading to the claim.

Several passages in this editorial seem perilously close to an article published by the BBC on March 2, 2004, however, shortly after this distant galaxy was discovered. I remember having seen it because March 2 is my birthday, and it's not every day that news of such a discovery breaks on ones birthday. Luckily, I even had a bookmark for the old article saved and had no trouble finding it again. The title of the BBC article is somewhat less sensational, too, as one might expect:

The VLT, which is sited in Chile, has pictured a small cluster of stars that are about 13.2 billion light-years from Earth.

The galaxy is being seen at a time when the Universe was just 470 million years old, which is barely 3% of its current age...

To make their observations, both teams used what is known as a "gravitational lens" - a massive foreground object that can bend and magnify the light of objects much further away...

Astronomers are now getting closer to what they term as the "Dark Ages", the time in the Universe's history when hydrogen and helium atoms had formed but had yet to come together to form the first stars.

Scientists want to see the "Cosmic Renaissance" - the time of first ignition - and the European team believes it has come very close...
Nowhere in the original story are there any scientists proposing that extraterrestrials engineering this or any other distant galaxies. The term "Dark Ages" has certainly been given a very different context in the new editorial, too. When the scientists who discovered the galaxy use the term, they're referring to a time period when hydrogen and helium atoms hadn't coalesced into masses great enough to begin the process of nuclear fusion. How one gets from that to a "black hole in hyperspace" is a bit of a mystery to me. Still, it's no less of a mystery than leaping from the scientific idea of "Cosmic Renaissance" as the moment at which fusion began due to a natural force like gravity to it being "artificially engineered by the Type IV civilization."

Isn't the universe interesting enough without having to invent woo-full science fictions plots as the India daily Technology Team has done in their bizarre editorial? Moreover, I have to wonder why they would decide to publish this four years after the discovery of the galaxy! Perhaps they were waiting for memories of legitimate articles regarding the discovery to fade before making up their Tales of Woo? Only they know for sure why they did it, but I know for sure that the people who discovered the galaxy haven't seen anything that made them think it's a product of alien intelligence.

If anyone knows what the India Daily Technology Team is in the habit of smoking before they write something like this, please pass that information along. I'd like to get some, too. Anything potent enough to produce visions of little green men with particle colliders producing entire galaxies to fill in hyperspace black holes has got to be terrific fun at parties!

Toxic Traditional Medicines: Lead, Mercury and Arsenic Poisonings Widespread

ERV reported on a jaw-droppingly stupid and woo-full convention of anti-vaccination true-believers a couple of days ago. I suggest having a look at it to get an understanding of how bizarre these people and their claims can get. To hear them tell it, pediatricians are essentially a bunch of evil-doers out to wipe out as many children as they can. They seem intent on making up all kinds of stories about the contents of vaccines, mainly to sell books and land guest-spots on Oprah.

But there is a real problem with the content of medicines routinely being given to adults and children throughout the USA. It's not the medicine your doctor prescribes, though. It's the traditional folk remedies that many of these same woo-meisters swear by. It turns out that a good number of these "medicines" contain high levels of poisonous heavy metals. Taken together, they may account for as many as 30% of all of the lead poisoning cases reported in children when their parents finally take them to see real doctors.

Folk Medicines Contain Lead

Maria didn't mean to poison her children. Quite the opposite. Worried about her daughters' lack of appetite, the young Houston mother was merely following her grandmother's advice when she gave the two girls and a niece a dose of "greta" — a Mexican folk medicine used to treat children's stomach ailments.

What Maria, who asked that her last name not be used, did not know then, but now will never forget, is that the bright orange powder is nearly 90 percent lead.

Fortunately, doctors detected the dangerously high levels of the toxic metal in the little girls' blood during a routine checkup a week later.

But others are not so lucky. Health departments around the country say traditional medicines used by many immigrants from Latin America, India and other parts of Asia are the second most common source of lead poisoning in the U.S. — surpassed only by lead paint — and may account for tens of thousands of such cases among children each year.

Dozens of adults and children have become gravely ill or died after taking lead-laden medicine over the past eight years, according to federal and local health officials...

"No one's testing these medications," said Dr. Stefanos Kales, an assistant professor of environmental health at the Harvard School of Public Health who researched the problem. "There's no guarantee it doesn't have dangerous levels of lead."

Lead is added to many of the concoctions because of its supposed curative properties, even though doctors say it has no proven medical benefits. In other cases, powders and pills become contaminated with lead from soil or through the manufacturing process...

In Texas, California and Arizona, lead poisoning has been traced to Mexican remedies such as greta, azarcon and rueda — powders that are given to treat constipation in children and contain as much as 90 percent lead. In New York City and Rhode Island, high lead levels in the blood have been tied to litargirio, a powder containing up to 79 percent lead. It is used by Dominican immigrants for such ills as foot fungus and body odor.

Dangerous amounts of lead have also been found in ayurvedic medicines, which are used in India and commonly found in South Asian immigrant communities in New York, Chicago and Houston. These medicines include ghasard, a brown powder given to relieve constipation in babies, and mahayogaraj gugullu, for high blood pressure.

Traditional medicines may account for up to 30 percent of all childhood lead poisoning cases in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The Environmental Protection Agency estimates 240,000 U.S. children were diagnosed with high blood lead levels in 2004 to 2006.

Many more cases are almost certainly going undetected. Only 14 percent of children are tested for lead nationwide...

The use of folk medicine is rooted in generations-old cultural traditions. Ayurvedic medicine, for example, originated more than 2,000 years ago in India, where 80 percent of the population uses it.

"People think, well, my grandmother did it, so it's not a problem. It's extremely hard to change cultures and beliefs," said Brenda Reyes with the Houston Health Department...

In a 2004 study that found high concentrations of lead in ayurvedic medicine, Boston University researcher Robert Saper bought 70 different ayurvedic remedies at 30 stores within a 20-mile radius of Boston City Hall. One in five contained potentially harmful levels of lead, mercury and arsenic.

After Saper's study was released, health inspectors in Houston, Chicago, San Francisco and New York City conducted sweeps, and also discovered dangerous ayurvedic remedies on store shelves...

In 2004, the CDC reported 12 cases of lead poisoning associated with ayurvedic remedies in Texas, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, New York and California. In one case, a 37-year-old woman, hospitalized with abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting, reported taking five different traditional medications for rheumatoid arthritis...
30% of 240,000 is about 80,000 children that have been poisoned, and that's only lead poisoning and only those cases which have been diagnosed successfully by reputable health professionals who reported them to the proper authorities. One wonders how high this number might go when mercury and arsenic are added, not to mention cases in which the poisoned children never saw a doctor. Add in adults taking this rubbish and the possible numbers may be truly frightening. How many victims could there have been in those years? 400,000? 500,000?

Unlike the vaccination-frighteners' notions, this isn't speculative. These are real poisonings that become known precisely because the cases show the symptoms that are associated with heavy metal intoxication. No one has ever demonstrated a mechanism by which Thimerosal causes autism; the symptoms of mercury poisoning simply don't include the same, or even a subset of, the symptoms of autism. People who are taking traditional medicines, ayurvedic and otherwise, are exhibiting exactly the symptoms one would expect in an individual who swallowed a bunch of lead. There's nothing the least bit tenuous about that.

With all the fear and ignorance spread by those who profit from the denigration of science-based medicine, though, you can bet that there won't be any conventions being organized by the Woo Crew to halt the sale of these poisons. As the story tells us, people think that because something has been used for a long time, or because it's "natural," that means it's effective and safe. They'll go right on with their poisoning because they're so worried about "stealth viruses" that they're willing to swallow arsenic pills to avoid them.

My Favorite Fungus Makes the News: Prostate Glands Rejoice

I admit it; I have a mycological bias. I have a favorite fungus, and it's Ganoderma lucidum that has won my heart. I did research while an undergraduate on some aspects of its ecology and came to love the organism. G. lucidum is, for lack of a better term, a biochemical powerhouse of a fungus. Most fungi have prowess in this area, it's true, but G. lucidum may well turn out to be a lifesaver for some of we humans, particularly we males.

Recent research at the University of Haifa would appear to have found several new active compounds in my favorite polypore that block androgen receptors, thus stopping the proliferation of malignant cells in the rise of prostate cancer. Other fungi produce similar compounds, but of the 68 species and 201 extracts tested, G. lucidum extract was the most effective.

Now, how can any guy slowly (ahem) approaching middle age not love a fungus like that?

Unfortunately, EurekAlert neglected to mention in their press release which journal is publishing these findings. If anyone knows, please tell me. Otherwise, I'll just have to wait for the University of Haifa contact person listed in the release to get back to me and hope for a preprint.

In the meantime, next time you see a cheery orange-and-white G. lucidum pad growing out of some old oak, give it a pat on the... errr... back and say, "Thanks for maybe someday saving my prostate gland!" Or if you don't have a prostate of your own, perhaps the prostate of someone you love.

AMDP: "Dismissing God," by Donald Hoffman

Anti-Matters Dissection ProjectThe first "paper" comprised by Anti-Matters is Dismissing God by Donald Hoffman. Hoffman is currently a professor of Cognitive Science at UC Irvine. As this piece contains not a single citation, either in the body or in a separate Works Cited section, I'll take it at face value for what it is — an opinion piece. It contains nothing about research and makes no evidence-based arguments. What it does contain, however, are some almost unbelievable mischaracterizations of how science works, the goals of scientific investigation, and what amounts to a tremendous argumentum ad ignorantum. I'll begin at the beginning, with the abstract:

Debates between theists and atheists often hinge, naturally enough, on advances in cognitive neuroscience and evolutionary biology. Here I contend that such advances, though relevant to the debate, cannot license deductively valid arguments for or against theism. I contend further that the central role of probability in evolutionary theory grants no inductive strength to arguments for or against theism. The Kolmogorov axioms of probability and the mathematical definition of a stochastic process suitably model mutation and selection; using this fact to conclude for or against theism requires, in either case, a leap of faith.
As any abstract should, this one lets us know what's coming. In this case, it's a strawman at the very least about evolutionary theory. Of course evolutionary theory grants no "inductive strength to arguments against theism." It isn't supposed to; evolutionary theory's purpose is to explain how diversity arose in living organisms. It isn't a religious theory and has nothing to do with arguments about theism. This is the typical theistic mischaracterization, though. The fact that we have found no need to invoke supernatural causation in order to explain biology isn't a statement about whether or not any given deity exists. We can simply say that no such entity was involved in the events leading to life as we now see it. Of course, this simple point doesn't sit well with Hoffman and he proceeds to go through some incredible twists and turns to come up with what is essentially a "god of the gaps" argument throughout this paper.

Hoffman then lists three instances of scientific investigation that have led to a natural explanation of physical phenomena, concluding the list by stating:
I will not try here to argue for or against the existence of God. I will simply observe that the three dismissals of God just scouted, despite their psychological appeal, do not survive a sober understanding of the scope and limits of science, the nature of human perception, and the modern theory of chance.
Dismissals of god? That's a rather interesting characterization; the choice of the word "dismissal" implies that these discoveries replaced something that came before them and, indeed, they did — arguments based upon assuming supernatural causation, generally from a religious basis. But these are two different things; investigation has led to predictive and repeatable information, whereas the religious model that preceded such investigation was simply a "best guess" based largely on analogy at best and nothing at all at worst. As we'll see in a moment, Hoffman is making an argument for the second case; the rest of his paper states that because human perception can be shown to be imperfect in some ways, that nothing can be known about reality. He manages to dismiss all empirical investigation by, in a convoluted manner, citing instances in which empirical investigation has demonstrated that perception can be incorrect, often in trivial ways and always in a manner which disregards the role of predictability and testability in scientific method.

I leave it to the reader to go over Hoffman's entire paper, but the sum of his argument lies in the following:
Research in the cognitive and neural sciences has made clear that our visual systems are not simply passive recorders of objective reality, but instead are active constructors of the visual realities we perceive. Each of us has within us a reality engine, which takes the images at the eyes and constructs three-dimensional worlds of objects, colors, textures, motions, and depth. What we see with each glance is not the world as it is objectively and as it would be even if there were no observers. Instead what we see is entirely our own construction.
Now, at this moment we have a major question before us. If our perception cannot make at least a good estimate of empirical reality, why should we rely on the results of "research in the cognitive and neural science?" How is it that this one little corner of reality escapes the same reconstructive process as any other bit of reality? He never answers this question; there's nothing offered anywhere in Hoffman's paper to explain why research in one area should be viable evidence for a phenomenon but that research in any other area can't result in a good explanation. Hoffman is locked immediately into an infinite regression from which there is no escape. If there can be no useful evidence, then one cannot posit that useful evidence exists for any specific thing, including the cognitive and neural sciences. If everything we perceive is "entirely our own construction," then we can never find reliable data to support or reject anything at all, including experiments conducted in the field of which Hoffman is particularly fond. While it is true that our own biases color our perception of reality to an extent, the whole point of scientific endeavor is to remove those very biases. In other words, science isn't something that is carried out by a single individual, complete with his or her own particular set of biases, but an ongoing process in which hundreds or thousands of investigators all bring something to the table. Because of this, the bias introduced by any one investigator can be found out and eliminated from the larger picture. Hoffman's contention in the light of this would seem to be that we all must have the same biases, but he offers no evidence of this and, indeed, his initial assertion that we can't really know anything precludes his doing so. This bit of information in itself would be an empirical, perceptually-derived fact, and Hoffman's whole argument is that such things don't exist. In Hoffman's world, such things are oxymorons. Reality exists beyond the scope of perception.

Hoffman finds several ways to restate this same assertion, settling finally on:
The situation, then, is that the world we experience as our perceptual reality is in fact an elaborate construction on our part. It is something we perceive in the phenomenal sense, not the relational sense. And what we construct is critically dependent on the rules we employ in the reality creation process. Realities that are not licensed by our rules are realities that we are not equipped to experience.
In reaching this point, Hoffman has cited what he considers evidence from optical illusions and dreams. This still begs the question, though, of whether or not we all have the same rules, as he puts it, for what does and doesn't fit into our perceptual reality. Again, he never addresses this point, but we can venture a good educated guess. Hoffman himself notes in his bit on the "subjective Necker cube" that various observes "may" see the edges of the cube and "perhaps" see a cube floating there. But this depends on how one looks at the optical illusion, and this itself is one of these perceptual rules. If one looks first at the black disks, as I did, instead of at the whole image at once, the illusory edges don't appear. This is precisely because one then has a priori knowledge of the illusion; the game is up. In other words, my "rule" is to first look at the smaller parts of a phenomenon, while the "rule" of others may be to look at the whole first. This tells us that perception is indeed colored by bias, but that bias, when based upon previous knowledge, doesn't cloud our overall perception but, in fact, informs it. This is the very stuff of pareidolia; we look for patterns and, given biasing knowledge, might see a face where none exists... but our perception can itself be tested by reference to previous knowledge. In the case of pareidolia, we can examine the illusion more closely and look for components and symmetries. In the case of Necker's cube printed on a piece of paper, we could feasibly check chemically for whether there was any ink on the paper where we thought we'd seen one of the cube's edges.

Hoffman has run right off the rails, in fact. This is the second component of empirical investigation that he disregards in order to make the assertion that knowledge is impossible; we can use independent lines of evidence to support or reject a hypothesis. In the case of Necker's cube, we can forget all about whether or not we see a cube and instead see whether there is ink on the paper. The only recourse to such a test that Hoffman would have left is that the chemical test we run to see whether or not the ink exists will influence the outcome. Still, we can overcome even this objection. We can cut this piece of paper into hundreds of tiny bits and not tell those running our test for ink about what it used to be. Their perception or lack thereof of a cube doesn't exist at all; they are merely looking for ink on a small piece of paper with no bias as to what that ink used to figure. They will either find ink or they won't based purely on chemical laws, and so much for Hoffman's contention that his example is anything more than a convenient triviality used to disingenuously support what should, by now, be readily apparent as a ridiculous argument.

The poor and incomplete reasoning that riddles this article doesn't stop here, though. Another misguided assertion is hard on its heels:
One might be tempted to say this is so based on an evolutionary argument: Creatures
whose perceptions in the phenomenal sense were too divergent from reality in the relational sense were at a competitive disadvantage, and natural selection has made sure that those of us who have survived have a good match between our phenomenal perceptions and the relational reality.

But this is not a valid argument within the structure of evolutionary theory. What natural selection secures, according to this theory, is survival to reproduction, not perceptual truth.
I'm at a loss for words here, so at the risk of sounding like a middle schooler, all I can come up with is "Well, duh." What Hoffman has done here is the equivalent of stating that a cookbook tells us nothing about how to play golf. It gets worse, however, because Hoffman seems to be making the assumption that a solid perception of reality isn't necessary to survive to reproduction! He goes on to talk about roaches and how they don't perceive things in the same way as humans (no, really), which entirely misses the point. A cockroach must still have good enough perception to survive to reproduction, but the requirements are different because the nature of the organism and its environment are different. A cockroach with faulty chemosensory apparatus is less likely to pass on its genes than is one with flawless perceptual mechanics. In other words, natural selection doesn't state that there is some absolute measure to which all traits must conform, but that the trait that gives an organism the best adaptive edge to its environment in response to pressures will be more fit than one with a less adaptive trait. Fitness is relative, not absolute, which Hoffman is making it out to be. While it is true that the perceptual abilities of any given organism, including humans, is limited, this doesn't preclude the possibility that we can extend those abilities. For example, my hearing isn't good enough to discern what is being said in a room in Los Angeles while I sit here in Massachusetts. However, by using various technologies that amplify that conversation, convert them into electromagnetic waves, broadcast them through space, and then convert them back into sound, I can tune my radio to a given frequency and hear that conversation perfectly well. Moreover, I can meet a friend who lives in New York for lunch and while we had no prior knowledge of what the other heard on the radio, we can have a discussion about that conversation that took place in California and agree on its content well enough to be able to talk about it. If the conversation was about an advance in molecular biology but my friend told me it had been about ballet, I would think that something had gone wrong with either myself or my friend; I wouldn't need to jump to the conclusion that our limited sense of hearing had produced two entirely different realities, but this is exactly what is necessary to support Hoffman's contention. If my friend were constantly misperceiving reality in this way, having what most of us would deem wild hallucinations, the likelihood of successful reproduction would, indeed, go down for him. If he'd been having them since birth, the likelihood that he would have survived to reproductive maturity would be slight, indeed. He'd have long since walked out onto a highway and been flattened by a passing truck or had some similar fate. All in all, Hoffman has made another fantastically specious assertion in order to dismiss the possibility of our perception of anything like an empirical reality, which is the point he makes in the very next paragraph:
Indeed it is highly unlikely that objective reality resembles in any way the worlds of our phenomenal construction.
Indeed? I've yet to see an even remotely convincing argument here, let alone systematic argumentation that leads to what Hoffman perceives as an inevitable conclusion. So far, this all looks a lot more like what I might expect from a first year philosophy student than it does a legitimate discussion about science or theology.But a few paragraphs later, this all gets even worse:
What this does make clear is that the ability of science to understand objective reality is limited by the perceptual and cognitive endowments of our species. Those endowments have not evolved, according to neo-Darwinian evolutionary theory, to give us truth, just to give to us, as also to the roach, survival to reproduction.
Hoffman is demanding here that there be some scientific theory of truth on a biological basis. Why? Science looks for evidence and supports or rejects; it isn't designed to derive some singular, universal truth. In fact, I find it rather curious that someone whose whole argument is that we are prevented by the limitations of our perception from saying anything about objective reality can turn around and now state that there is some objective truth that isn't being properly accounted for in evolutionary theory! This is such a grand compounding of nonsense that I feel justified in saying that it may be one of the silliest, emptiest statements ever uttered by mankind. We can't know whether a cube printed on a piece of paper is real, we can't make judgments about the relatedness of species based on molecular data, but we can posit that there exists something beyond our perception? Upon what would we even base such an assertion? All we can say is whether or not there is evidence of some phenomenon. We see plenty of evidence that our perceptions have a sound relationship to reality because we share those perceptions and the knowledge drawn from them to some extent. We can use independent lines of evidence and remove bias from testing our ideas about the things we perceive. What apparatus perceives truth apart from perception? How shall we test for such a thing? We can find evidence for or against some particular thing being true, but there is no property of "truth" that exists like some shining Platonic form upon which "truths" are modeled. Hoffman wants to eject knowledge, it seems, in favor of something about which nothing at all can be said in order to make room for the existence of something he's going to call "God." In other words, he's not satisfied with a "god of the gaps" argument, as he started off his article telling us. That's not enough; he wants to turn the whole universe into one big gap and then posit deity.

Hoffman now goes on to make a bunch of assertions about probability theory that, taken only in conjunction with the nonsense he's given up to this point, leaves room for God as a controlling entity behind what we perceive to be random events (e.g., mutation, roulette). There's no need to go into this in detail, however. Suffice it to say that Hoffman spends a few paragraphs dismissing the notion of probability theory, because if there's no such thing as randomness, then all probabilities are 1.

His concluding paragraph is precious, though:
...There is no evidence from the sciences or elsewhere that logically compels belief or disbelief in God. It is elementary in the philosophy of science that no matter how much data one collects, there will always be infinitely many theories compatible with that data, and that make contradictory predictions about the outcomes of new experiments. It is because the theories of science are not logically dictated (although surely influenced) by the facts that scientific theory building is such an interesting and nontrivial enterprise. The atheist, then, can marshal an array of evidence that there is no God, and the theist that there is. In neither case can the evidence logically prove the claim. Both choices are, equally, a step of faith.
See what I mean? Of course nothing in the sciences compels belief or disbelief in anything at all. Science doesn't deal in beliefs; it's not the role of science to dictate belief but to discover evidence. Without all of Hoffman's earlier contentions, which I think have been thoroughly disproven not just by my own arguments but by hundreds of years of investigation, his statement that scientific theories are not logically dictated vanishes like an ice cube in an oven. For the rest of the world, however, scientific theories are logically dictated because they must fit the facts, things which Hoffman would like to tell us don't exist or at least can't be discerned. Science doesn't "marshal evidence" that God doesn't exist, it simply doesn't find an empty space which can be logically filled only by supernatural agency, whether that agency be God, gods, leprechauns or intelligent and animated heaps of pasta. By dismissing the possibility of our perceiving anything objective about the universe, though, Hoffman allows himself the luxury of equating two very different kinds of evidence, because clearly the evidence (not against the supernatural but for natural explanations being sufficient) presented by science and the evidence (not for how things are but against dissent from a priori conclusions based on traditional beliefs) espoused by religion. Clearly, this is a dismissal of logic itself; arguments from authority (religion) are fallacious, whereas arguments based upon valid and/or cogent assertions based, in turn, upon what is objectively known are not.

Here, then, is my review of this first paper from Anti-Matters. It turns out to be nonsensical; this is the kind of thing that some college student might have concocted while under the influence of certain potently mind-bending ergotamines. "Dude, how do we know that we both see green the same way? Wow!" There are no citations provided for the reader to follow up and see even whether the way in which Hoffman has used the work of others mentioned in his paper is valid. I have not attempted to do so, but I certainly have my doubts about this. The reader will note, however, that instead of the usual Literature Cited section that one sees at the end of a paper in a legitimate peer-reviewed journal there is a page of self-referential information about Anti-Matters, encouraging readers not to investigate further the claims in this paper but, instead, to simply go and read some more woo.

This isn't a very auspicious start to my dissection of Anti-Matters, is it? I suspect that the guano will be piled deeper and deeper as I go forward in examining the articles here. Tomorrow, I shall break out both scalpel and intellectual snorkel and attempt to wade into the next article.

The Chroming of the Dome: On the Joys of Being Bald

Just before waking up this morning, I had a nightmare — more properly a morningmare, I suppose, but there's no word in English to describe a bad dream in the early hours of the day. In any case, I dreamed that I was about to depart a lecture hall and had left my hat on a window ledge. As I put it on, I noticed that there was hair getting into my eyes. I could feel it on my ears, too, and the itch it caused was infuriating. I took my hat off but the hair was still there. I reasoned that it had to be a wig and tried to pull it off with no success. The hair was growing out of my head! I found a mirror and looked at myself and thought that I looked ridiculous. All I wanted to do was get this irritating mass of keratin off of me. And then I woke up.

This brief bad dream is a good depiction of how I feel about having hair. Despite countless TV commercials and marketing ploys that have attempted to convince me that I should feel otherwise about my follicular situation, I like being bald. My only regret about it is that there isn't a pill I can pop to make the little bit of hair that still insists on bristling up from my scalp stop doing so entirely. Then I wouldn't have to shave.

I've heard that baldness is a heritable trait passed down through one's maternal ancestry. I don't know with any certainty whether that's true in general, but it definitely isn't true for my lineage. While many of the men on my mother's side of the family saw their hair thinning as they entered their sixties, it was on my father's side that they lost it entirely by their thirties. This is true for the three generations I can trace my family on either side, in any case. My paternal grandfather, for example, was a 6'4" giant of a man who worked as a prison guard for most of his life and bore the nickname Mister Clean among his fellows, a moniker that became the name of his boat after he'd retired and moved to Miami Beach. My paternal uncle was bald as well. Ironically, my father kept his hair. As for me, my hairline began a rapid retreat from my eyebrows by the time I was in my early 20's.

I was a punk rocker in high school. Part of my rebellious regalia was my red and blue hair. When I went away for my first attempt at a university education in 1983, I stopped coloring my hair and let it grow to my shoulders. I'd moved in with a gaggle of neo-hippies by 1985 and let it grow even longer as I toured a few Grateful Dead shows and dropped the occasional dose of acid. By 1988, when I left school, I started cutting it shorter again because I needed to find work and had been brought up to believe, per my prison guard grandfather and police officer father, that long hair told the world that you were a person not to be trusted. When I moved to a very conservative part of Pennsylvania less than two years later, I cut it even shorter and took a job at a printing concern that demanded its employees looked well-groomed as defined by Mennonite Brethren standards.

By the time I'd moved to San Francisco late in 1991, my hairline had already receded noticeably. I let my hair grow again for awhile, but I no longer felt comfortable with the way I looked. I was on the bus home from my job at a promotional print design firm South of Market when it dawned on me that maybe I'd look better with my hair cut extremely short, as in a buzz. I got off the bus a couple of stops early and walked into the nearest barber shop, which turned out to be very near the corner of Irving and 9sup Avenues, a stretch occupied mainly by Chinese-owned businesses. There were no other customers, and the woman who seated me in a chair asked me how I wanted it done. I told her that I wanted my hair cut as short as she could. She picked up a comb and scissors, but I explained to her that I meant really short. She wasn't quite understanding me, so I pointed to the electric clippers hung up on the side of her stand. She looked puzzled, so I tried to explain to her what I meant. She kind of got it; she clipped my hair down to about a half-inch, and I didn't like it at all. I told her to chop it back to 1/8", and she didn't understand that at all. One of her coworkers explained to her in Chinese and then she proceeded to give me the clipping I wanted. I paid and walked the rest of the way home.

The next morning, I still thought it looked all wrong. As I was shaving to leave for work, I decided that the leftover bit of fuzz had to go. I've shaved my head in the same way nearly every day for the past 15+ years now. I have yet to feel the smallest regret for my decision to do so.

At about the same time as I first began shaving my head, I began noticing ads for various hair restoration treatments. I believe this was the same time as Minoxidil hit the market, and of course there was the "I'm not only the president of the Hair Club for Men, I'm also a client" campaign. Nowadays, there are any number of remedies for baldness. We've got Finasteride and copper peptides and spironolactone. If you'd like to pretend that your head is a Christmas tree, you can buy what amounts to hair-colored flocking in a spray can. You can get bits of hair-producing flesh gouged out of one spot and grafted into those at which growth has ceased; I'm told that the procedure no longer results in the look of a doll head. If you're really desperate and not put off by a bit of elective mutilation and a price tag in the neighborhood of $10,000, you can even get the bald parts of your head cut out and the hairy bits stitched together. Yummy stuff, no?

I realize that not all men look good without hair. If one has a lumpy or pointy head, for instance, hair serves an important purpose in covering up the flaws. For those with well-shaped craniums, however, I wonder why it is that there's such a worry about showing the old dome off to the world. In my personal experience, I've found that there are plenty of women who appreciate the look and I must say that long fingernails raked over an exposed scalp in just the right way is one of the most enjoyable sensations one can experience. So why are there so many heavily-marketed remedies for baldness? This isn't a disease needing a cure, after all. This is just what some men look like, particularly the lucky ones... the ones who, twenty years ago, weren't letting the hair go long on one side to comb it over and grease it down (did that ever seem like a good idea?) Of course, there have always been toupees and wigs available. I particularly like the one shown in the image to the right, modeled for us by former NYC mayor and current Republican presidential candidate Rudy Giuliani — who used to wear a combover before coming to the conclusion that he was a gentleman who preferred blonds.

That's what marketing does, though. When there's no real need to fill, it's nice to be able to create one and draw a salary in the process, I'm sure. Would I ever try one? Hell no! I like my hair the way it is: far, far away from me. I've never sat down and calculated how much I've saved on shampoos and conditioners and who-knows-what-else hairy-headed folks slather on their brainpans every day, but I'm sure it's a sizable sum. I never have a bad hair day; the closest I get is when my shaving razor needs replacing, and that's easy to do. I am entirely unafraid of dandruff; the fungus that causes it can find no suitable home on my head. Bugs and bats never get tangled in my bare scalp, and if you think the wind feels good blowing through your hair, you ought to check out how it feels when the hair's out of the way. When it gets cold, I put on a hat to protect myself from potential brain-freezing. If I had hair, what would I have done on all those hot days in Florida?

The marketing would have us believe that hair loss is some terrible thing; have a look at this particularly nasty snippet:

A nightmare to any person? I have nightmares about the stuff growing back! I have never once felt embarrassed or stigmatized, though I am aware of the fact that other people think that I might, and all that is for me is an occasion for icebreaking humor. A couple of weeks ago, for instance, a fellow bald colleague of mine and I were at a happy hour, discussing lab protocols over beers, when a third colleague asked if he could join us as the two of us were part of the mythic Confederacy of Bald Men. My response to him was that if we two hairless scientists were to put our heads together, we could make a real ass of ourselves (think about it a moment). I've never felt the least bit uncomfortable despite all the dollars spent on advertising space to tell me that I should. I look at such things in the same way that I view campaigns that tell women that they need to have a bony backside and perfectly round F-cup breasts for some guy to find them attractive. It's all very silly stuff and none of it takes into account the joys of either a well-padded posterior or a gloriously smooth cranium.

Every morning, I wake up and shave, like most American men. I take an extra three minutes or so to cover the top and back of my head as well as the front. I currently use a Gillette Sensor razor, triple-bladed, as I find the twin blade version isn't as good for getting the little bits where my ears join the sides of my head. I don't need to comb, arrange, flatten or color anything up there. When I'm done, I step outside and feel the wind or sun right there on my bare scalp. The best part of it is, LL loves how my head feels right after I shave, so I'm subject to frequent cerebral caresses immediately after leaving the bathroom. I can't think of a finer way to start off the day.

Speaking of which, I need to go shower and shave, so I'll leave this entry here. Pass the shave gel and hold the Minoxidil slather, please!

Cookies, Boobs and Woo

Japan has a bit of an obsession with women's bust sizes, it seems. Not that I, a typical American heterosexual male, don't, but I would never advocate that women risk strokes and cancer over it. That seems to be par for the course in Japan, though, where over-the-counter consumer items promising women a more voluminous bosom are a fixture.

The latest of these is a cookie whose name translated into English is "F-cup."

...The makers of F-Cup Cookies claim two a day can boost busts by a whole cup size.

Each biscuit contains 50mg of a herb called Pueraria mirifica which they say mimics the effect of oestrogen and bulks up breast tissue...
The herb does, in fact, contain esterols quite similar to human estrogen, so they could well cause swelling of breast tissue depending on genetic predisposition. On the other hand, taking esterols in high dosage can also lead to strokes and cancers of the reproductive system. This is why women over thirty-five or who smoke, etc., generally aren't prescribed birth control pills.

Cookies that can cause irreversible damage or even kill marketed to the insecure. What will they think of next?

Time for Theists and Design Advocates to Step Up and Answer

A new study indicates that a tiny organism spread by biting flies in Africa, responsible for a disease called onchocerciasis that causes blindness and currently afflicts some 37,000,000 people, is rapidly evolving resistance to the only drug available for treatment.

Ivermectin, the standard drug for treating river blindness (onchocerciasis), is causing genetic changes in the parasite that causes the disease, according to a new study by Roger Prichard (McGill University, Canada) and colleagues, published on August 30, 2007 in the open-access journal PLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases. These genetic changes have previously been linked with parasites becoming resistant to ivermectin...

Ivermectin has been used for mass treatment of river blindness for up to 18 years and is currently the only safe drug available for mass treatment of the estimated 37 million people infected with the O. volvulus parasite. According to this study, the genetic selection shown “could have implications for the development of ivermectin resistance in O. volvulus and for the ongoing onchocerciasis control programmes..."

The question for Creationists and Intelligent Design advocates of all stripes is this: why would a creator and/or intelligent designer devise a mechanism by which an organism that destroys millions of human lives every year could overcome the sole known treatment and create even more misery? In other words, why would this omnipotent and benevolent entity that created everything have created the disease-causing organism, created us with the capacity to combat the disease, and then throw in the additional twist of fooling us by making it so that the parasite could come roaring back not even two decades after the hope of alleviating the pain came into being?

All coherent responses will be entertained. Attacks against asking the question at all, personal invective, etc., will not be published.

Science gives us an answer as to why this happens, and a clear one at that. What's the theistic reason for this phenomenon?

"Nutritional Supplement" Contains Prescription Drug, FDA Warns

Red yeast rice, a nutritional supplement that has gained some popularity for its ability to reduce cholesterol levels, actually works! The bad news is that it works because it contains a prescription drug called lovastatin (brand names Mevacor and Altocor), a prescription drug sold by legitimate dispensaries in controlled doses. Lovastatin interacts with many other drugs and even some foods, most notably grapefruit juice, and so is prone to producing side effects that can be very harmful, even fatal, when not used with care.

Long story short, red yeast rice can kill you despite its rather innocent-sounding name.

The FDA has issued a warning on this supplement and ordered its distributors to stop selling it. As of this morning, however, I went onto a website run by one of the companies that has been notified by the FDA and can still purchase the stuff. No mention of the warning is made anywhere on the site, for that matter. I noticed that many of the products sold on this website as "cholesterol/cardio aids" contain red yeast rice.

The following is a copy of the FDA warning, reproduced from the FDA website:

FDA Warns Consumers to Avoid Red Yeast Rice Products Promoted on Internet as Treatments for High Cholesterol
Products found to contain unauthorized drug


The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is warning consumers not to buy or eat three red yeast rice products promoted and sold on Web sites. The products may contain an unauthorized drug that could be harmful to health. The products are promoted as dietary supplements for treating high cholesterol.

The potentially harmful products are: Red Yeast Rice and Red Yeast Rice/Policosonal Complex, sold by Swanson Healthcare Products, Inc. and manufactured by Nature’s Value Inc. and Kabco Inc., respectively; and Cholestrix, sold by Sunburst Biorganics. FDA testing revealed the products contain lovastatin, the active pharmaceutical ingredient in Mevacor, a prescription drug approved for marketing in the United States as a treatment for high cholesterol.

“This risk is even more serious because consumers may not know the side effects associated with lovastatin and the fact that it can adversely interact with other medications," said Steven Galson, M.D., M.P.H., director of FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research.

These red yeast rice products are a threat to health because the possibility exists that lovastatin can cause severe muscle problems leading to kidney impairment. This risk is greater in patients who take higher doses of lovastatin or who take lovastatin and other medicines that increase the risk of muscle adverse reactions. These medicines include the antidepressant nefazodone, certain antibiotics, drugs used to treat fungal infections and HIV infections, and other cholesterol-lowering medications.

FDA has issued warning letters advising Swanson and Sunburst Biorganics to stop promoting and selling the products. Companies that do not resolve violations in FDA warning letters risk enforcement actions, such as an injunction against continuing violations and a seizure of illegal products.

The FDA warning letters state that the products Red Yeast Rice, Red Yeast Rice/Policosonal Complex, and Cholestrix, sold on the firm’s websites, are unapproved new drugs that are marketed in violation of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. The warning letters are available on FDA’s Web site: www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/wlcfm/recentfiles.cfm.

FDA advises consumers who use any red yeast rice product to consult their health care provider if they experience problems that may be due to the product.

It is also worth noting that this isn't the first time that this company has been warned by the FDA about its products. This 2004 warning letter was sent in reference to several of Sunburst's products which, the company claimed, were used to treat cancer and arthritis.

It should be noted that this is an especially egregious case. According to the warning letter sent to Sunburst on August 7:
Traditional red yeast rice does not contain more than trace amounts of lovastatin, if any. Because Cholestrix contains red yeast rice with enhanced or added lovastatin, and bears a claim about the "powerful cholesterol fighting" benefits supplied by this ingredient, it cannot be marketed as a dietary supplement. Section 201(ff) of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (the Act), 21 U.S.C. § 321(ff), specifically excludes from the dietary supplement definition articles that are approved as new drugs under section 505 of the Act, 21 U.S.C. § 355, unless the article in question was marketed as a dietary supplement or food before its approval as a drug. 21 U.S.C. § 321(ff)(3)(B). FDA approved Mevacor as a new drug on August 31, 1987; neither lovastatin as a single ingredient, nor any red yeast rice product manufactured and promoted for lovastatin content, was marketed as a dietary supplement or as a food before that date. Therefore, lovastatin's approval as a new drug preceded its marketing as a food or dietary supplement, and your lovastatin-enhanced product is excluded from the dietary supplement definition.
So much for alternative medicine not relying on "big pharma." Apparently, the folks who make red yeast rice products may be in the habit of adding lovastatin to their "supplement." It turns out that in this case, alt-medicine true-believers were taking a prescription medication all along but, unlike the case with real doctors, nobody bothered to tell them.

Isn't it about time that the special protection of "nutritional supplements" was removed? This label is all-too-frequently abused by providing the many unscrupulous marketers of woo to sell dangerous drugs like they were candy. By not being classified as either food or drugs, these so-called supplements escape immediate scrutiny by the FDA and so have an opportunity to net those who sell them a nice chunk of change regardless of the significant harm they may wind up doing to the unknowing and/or uneducated consumers who buy them.

In this case, the "nutritional supplement" in question is quite volatile stuff. Not only is there a significant danger of overdose, but lovastatin can interact with everything from prescription anti-depressants to over the counter vitamins. If you've been taking red yeast rice supplements, talk to your doctor even if you haven't noticed any side effects. The kind of damage done here can take a long time to be noticed and, by then, could be quite severe. Why risk it?

The best way to put these poison-pushers out of business is to not fall for their claims in the first place. Don't buy junk medicine like this and talk to a qualified professional before you put anything in your body that isn't food!

Of Digging Up Errors and Aliens

I was surfing a little while ago and ran across something I wasn't looking for, and not a good thing. Specifically, I ran across the website and blog of an ex-girlfriend. Not just any ex-girlfriend, though. She's a big part of the reason — I'd say about a third — of why I didn't finish my undergraduate degree until this year. It's an old story. Something happened that damaged me enough to what I believe was a nervous breakdown. I gave up on myself and literally walked away from life and spent years finding my way back. Suffice to say that this event is on the top ten list of the absolute worst moments of my existence. There's a twist, I think, but I'll get to that. I rarely do things the easy way.

For the sake of preserving her anonymity as well as avoiding any contact with her, I'll call her Badnews. Badnews cheated on me with my undergrad advisor, a professor I trusted profoundly at the time. As much, in fact, as I trusted Badnews herself. I also found out at the time that she'd been doing a lot of drugs with him. Now, I'm not saying I was Mr. Clean, even if I look a bit like him now. I went through that period in my life, too. Still, what she was doing made my own usage of mind-altering substances look like a mild addiction to soda pop. Moreover, there was a history of mental disease in her family; her father was a diagnosed and medicated schizophrenic.

Badnews, you see, had pretty much blown her brains out and I didn't know about it or, more likely, didn't want to believe it. It was all trippy and coolness and whatever, and I didn't want to admit to myself what was going on inside that curly little head of hers. When the end came for us, it came horribly. She couldn't even understand by then that what she'd done with this professor was wrong, that she'd absolutely lied to and betrayed me and torn my heart out of my chest and used it for a trampoline while wearing spiked heels. So instead of the relationship simply ending, Badnews went for a crawl into a fantasy world that culminated with her trying to dig up a hillside with a garden shovel because she was convinced that aliens in a UFO buried there were sending her messages. No exaggeration. I mean it when I say that she went off the deep end. I gave up on myself and lost any trace of self-esteem for some time. I was excruciatingly depressed; Badnews had a psychotic break.

Today, as I said, I found her journal. I know it's her because, of all things, I recognize the name of a cat her parents owned when she and I were together. It's a very unusual name; it's the same as the Armenian word for "stomach." She described the cat in her blog, too. Then I found her sister's name (Badnews' sister, not the cat's) which is also rather uncommon. I'm sure beyond any reasonable doubt that this is the same person.

The twist? Badnews is now an ultra-ultra-orthodox Jew. She's dived completely into religion... strict Biblical interpretation, cover every part of your body, take a ritual bath after you have your period, my husband is the lord of the house religion. If one thinks about it, it's not that far from digging up UFO's; aliens are the angels of the modern age (or at least used to be...)

For a few moments, I thought about sending her an email. I'm entitled to a moment of stupidity as much as anyone else. The important part is that I didn't. It only took a couple of minutes to realize that I really don't have a damned thing I want to say to her, and even if I did, what would be the point of it? I was already feeling queasy just from having found her online presence. Did I really want to establish any sort of contact, however brief? What possible point could there be? What good could it do? I have, after all, moved on. I've patched up the holes, as it were. I went back to school, I finished my degree, I'm going on. I'm with a woman whom I love beyond all possibility of description, whom I respect and whom I have come to trust with my life after these past 11 years of ups and downs.

I resolved the damage in my own way. It took a long time and a lot of work, but I did it. And Badnews, after all, was only ⅓ responsible for what I went through. Another third of that was my own doing, so why undo even a little bit of it now? Why revisit that steaming fecal heap of failure? I don't need the voices of aliens or angels to tell me right from wrong, about how to go forward. I don't need to spend half my life with my head bowed. I'm not the one, thankfully, who went through a psychotic break and wound up resolving it by submersing my personality in those of substitute father figures (first a professor, then a religious fanatic, and then a deity). How she did it is her own business and her own problem. What happened happened 20 years ago now.

Like everyone else, I have my down moments and my self-doubts, but lately I've come to feel like the world is opening up for me in amazing ways. Aside from being a poor student, my horizons are wide open, not tightly bound by 5,000 year old rules that I impose upon myself to feel like I'm doing the right thing by daddy. Having been at both ends of this emotional spectrum, I gotta tell you... that's a very good place to be. My stay in hell was relatively brief; hers is lifelong from my perspective. Fine. I'm not about to get involved with it, not even to the extent of saying that I've climbed out of the pit.

Of course, there's that other ⅓... the professor in question. He's still alive; he lives in a tiny little apartment in upstate New York. I know this because he also has a blog (doesn't everyone?). I found it some time ago; it's raving. The guy is so far out there now, due perhaps to his own combination of heavy drug use and the onset of some form of senility, that he's damned near made up his own language that nobody else speaks. Needless to say, I haven't emailed him, either, and have no intention of ever doing so. It may seem petty of me, but I'll be honest, anyhow; I hope his mind dims very, very slowly as he descends toward his grave. Of everyone involved, he should have known better.

There. I've vented. I feel better for having done so.
